Keyword Research Starter Guide – The Basics

It is my hope that this guide will bring to light the importance of choosing the right keywords for your website product and services. People often take this for granted and miss out on opportunities which could bring them more traffic, more sales and ultimately more Great British Pounds in their pockets!

The first thing that any new website owner looking to optimise their website is identify suitable keywords for their product or service. Failure to do this accurately will have a significant effect on the websites ability to achieve visibility within the search results.

If you are a business owner and dont have a website yet or your website is still in design, it would be worth starting this research now so you can look at implementing SEO Landing Pages at this stage. A guide on SEO Landing Pages will be written in the coming weeks so watch this space!

It is important to identify all related search terms surrounding it. For example:

Head Terms

These terms are the broad, highly competitive search terms which will naturally attract the most traffic to a website. They are also the hardest to rank for and the front page of any search engine is generally populated by long standing, well establish businesses.

  • Search Engine Optimisation
  • Pay Per Click Advertising

Long Tail Keyphrases

Long tail keyphrases are effectively extensions of the main terms and can fall into many categories. I personally prefer to keep everything separate, organised and manageable so I split everything into as many groups as possible, for example:

Geographic Target Based Keyphrases

These types of terms are often common when search engine users are searching for services rather than products. They are generally less competitive than the head terms but will still require a significant effort to rank highly for.

Taking the above example of Search Engine Optimisation a step further would give us:

  • Search Engine Optimisation UK
  • Search Engine Optimisation Hampshire
  • Search Engine Optimisation London
  • Search Engine Optimisation Southampton

You’ll often find these keywords on Small to Medium businesses or those than are just starting up as they are often the best for acquiring local business. Depending on the industry and location they vary wildly in competitiveness and search volume.

Generalised  Keyphrases

Moving onwards slightly with the keyword research, we start seeing phrases with prefix ‘s such as:

  • … Company
  • … Consultant
  • … Agency
  • … Specialist
  • … Training

These are also excellent terms to focus on and can often accompany the location based keyphrases well. Again, very competitive terms but you can go a step further and add the locations to the full generalised phrases to further reduce competitiveness, doing so will also reduce the search volume for the keyphrases.

There are more categories that can be used than the ones listed above, it is all down to personal preference. Some of the more common groupings I come up with have been listed below:

  • Branded Keyphrases
  • Size Variations
  • Informative Keyphrase Variations

And Finally…

It’s important to ensure that keyword research is done with thought and foresight. Missing a keyphrase that could potentially bring those much needed visitors to your website at this stage could mean that implementing it at a later date takes more time and costs more money.

This is often one of the most enduring and time consuming tasks to complete. When you feel like you’ve done enough just persevere and do a little more, you can never be sure what you will find!

So thats the basics from my point of view, more advanced stuff and the integration of this into the website will be done in the coming weeks along with the landing page optimisation guide.
