I have had the fortune to work at some of the largest SEO agencies throughout the world. I must admit that these companies have been growing companies but are now hugely successful and still growing year on year.
I started my career in SEO at Guava (formally Neutralize) and had the chance to work with some very experienced people such as Edward ‘Teddie’ Cowell and team of SEO specialists Andrew Thomas, Adam Orchard (Cornishman in London) and Gary Moyle. Working within the linking teams allowed me to learn about off-site SEO at great depth and experience the satisfaction of seeing excellent results for clients big and small.
After completing just over two years at Guava as a linking strategist I took some time out to tavel Australia and once I was happy that I had my fill of travelling (turned out im not a fan of living it rough) I looked for work in Sydney and started my employment at Outrider (Part of Group M) as a SEO Specialist.
Outrider showed me SEO at a much more technical level that my linking duties ever required and I learned alot from the guys and gals there. (Props to StevenWulz, David Boyd and Amy Saunders for welcoming me into the group and pushing me to find the answers to questions through case studies, whitepapers and self produced testing). I never felt at home in Sydney and I left Outrider for home (Cornwall, England). Upon my return I again looked for work locally but to no avail.
Shortly after returning I had a call from an old friend at Guava who needed another SEO knowledgeable person to work within his team at a company in Newbury. Unfortunately this was a dark period in my SEO career. My old friend left the company and I found myself working for the weekend rather than for the enjoyment. This was unsettling and after various changes internally within the business I decided that I wanted out and I wanted out very quickly. The company name shall not be mentioned, ever.
I now work at Marmalade on Toast, a fantastic design, development, search and very much forward thinking company with some of the nicest people I have ever met. Everyone at Marmalade works to better themselves so that they can further not just themselves but the company as a whole. On a daily basis I see designers developing their own web projects and the developers pushing design ideas back to the designers. I get to bounce ideas around for the future of the business, discuss the benefits of future web technologies and how they can be adapted in a search engine friendly way to better our clients and generally have a most excellent time doing it.
The future holds a lot of things not just for myself but the company I am a part of and I look forward to every second of it!
